Jet Airways’ Konnect to introduce daily flights on Kochi - Bengaluru - Ahmedabad sectors

PR Log (Press Release) – Mar 23, 2010 – Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, will enhance its domestic network, with the introduction of new services, as well as the enhancement of services on existing Konnect services on certain domestic routes.
Effective March 28, 2010, Jet Airways’ Konnect service will introduce daily flights on the Kochi - Bengaluru - Ahmedabad sectors, aboard its state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
From Monday to Saturday, flight 9W 2306 will daily depart Kochi at 0745 hrs, arriving in Bengaluru at 0845 hrs. Flight 9W 2306 will then depart Bengaluru at 0930 hrs, arriving in Ahmedabad at 1130 hrs.
On Sundays only, flight 9W 2306 will daily depart Kochi at 0745 hrs, arriving in Bengaluru at 0845 hrs. Flight 9W 2306 will then depart Bengaluru at 1000 hrs, arriving in Ahmedabad at 1200 hrs.
Flight 9W 2307 will daily depart Ahmedabad at 1500 hrs, arriving in Bengaluru at 1700 hrs. Flight 9W 2307 will then depart Bengaluru at 1740 hrs, arriving in Kochi at 1840 hrs.
Jet Airways Konnect will also introduce services on the Hyderabad-Chennai-Port Blair sectors, where it will operate five flights weekly (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday), aboard its Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Flight 9W 2361 will depart Hyderabad at 0820 hrs, arriving in Chennai at 0925 hrs. Flight 9W 2362 will then depart Chennai at 1000 hrs, arriving in Port Blair at 1205 hrs.
Flight 9W 2363 will depart Port Blair at 1240 hrs, arriving in Chennai at 1440 hrs. Flight 9W 2364 will then depart Chennai at 1600 hrs, arriving in Hyderabad at 1710 hrs.
Effective March 28, 2010 Jet Airways Konnect service will also introduce a daily service between Mumbai and Nagpur, enhancing the frequency of services from the current four flights/week on the sector, as well as introduce its third service on the Mumbai-Indore sector.
Flight 9W 2020 will depart Mumbai at 1515 hrs, arriving in Nagpur at 1630 hrs. Flight 9W 2021 will depart Nagpur at 1705 hrs, arriving in Mumbai at 1820 hrs.
Flight 9W 2402 will depart Mumbai at 1230 hrs, arriving in Indore at 1350 hrs from Monday to Friday, and on Sundays. On Saturdays only, flight 9W 2402 will depart Mumbai at 1155 hrs, arriving in Indore at 1315 hrs.

PR Log (Press Release) – Mar 04, 2010 – —  Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who was hailed a hero after piloting the US Airways flight that landed safely on the Hudson River in January of last year, is retiring.
Sullenberger will fly his final flight Wednesday afternoon, along with his co-pilot during the Hudson landing, First Officer Jeff Skiles. Sullenberger will end his 30-year career when he lands at his home base at Charlotte (N.C.) Douglas International Airport. He will officially retire at a private ceremony there with fellow pilots and other US Airways employees.
Sullenberger, 59, joined US Airways' predecessor airline in 1980.

Flight attendant Doreen Welsh, 59, who was on Flight 1549 when it landed in the Hudson, is also retiring. Welsh, 59, joined US Airways' predecessor airline in 1970.
All 150 passengers survived the emergency river landing in January 2009 when the plane's engines were struck by birds. The plane landed within minutes of taking off from New York's LaGuardia. It was supposed to fly to Charlotte, N.C.
One of the survivors, Mary Berkwitz, said by phone from her Stallings, N.C., office that she was disappointed to hear the news.
"Every time I get on a plane, I feel like, Oh God, I hope it's Sully at the pilot's seat. Now I know it's not going to be. In a way it's sad," she said.
Since that famous flight last year, Sullenberger has testified before Congress regarding pilot safety, given speeches about education and written a book, "Highest Duty."
He became a member of US Airways' flight operations safety management team last September.
Capt. James Ray, a spokesman for the US Airline Pilots Association, which represents US Airways pilots, said a US Airways pilot with as much experience as Sullenberger makes about $130,000 to $150,000 a year, about the same as 1989. Pilots at US Airways lost their pensions as the airline went through two bankruptcy proceedings after Sept. 11.

Ray said that Sullenberger plans to spend more time with his family in retirement. He will also continue to talk to lawmakers about raising minimum qualifications for pilots and work to lower the maximum number of hours pilots are able to work in a single day.
"Each generation of pilots hopes that they will leave their profession better off than they found it," Sullenberger said in a statement. "In spite of the best efforts of thousands of my colleagues, that is not the case today.
"Though I am retiring, I will continue to serve as the same kind of advocate I have always been — not only for aviation safety, but for the airline piloting profession. I will work to remind the entire industry — and those who manage and regulate it — that we have a sacred duty to our passengers to do the very best that we know how to do."
While Sullenberger walked away from the emergency landing unscathed, flight attendant Doreen Welsh was seriously injured in the crash and has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Speaking to The Associated Press from her home in Ambridge, Pa., she says she is still afraid of the water.
Her continued discomfort while flying since the crash led her to the decision to leave the only job she has ever had.
She signed on at the age of 19. "I grew up out there," she said.
Like Sullenberger, Welsh plans to move on to a career giving speeches about her experience in the crash.
"I feel grateful for still being alive," she said. The opportunities of the last year "have been wonderful, but it was a high price to pay. And if I could go back, I would have rather just been flying and doing my job and not having gone through that, because I have to live with that for the rest of my life."

Cruise Liner QE2 on Sale

PR Log (Press Release) – Feb 09, 2010 – Dubai World is putting the iconic cruise liner QE2 up for sale, as well as host of other interests including circus troupe Cirque du Soleil, as it grapples to cut its $22bn debt mountain.
Last week the conglomerate’s investment subsidy, Istithmar, started proceedings with the sale of a 13 percent stake in Indian domestic airline SpiceJet.
It has also entered into talks to sell Inchcape Shipping Services, the UK port agent, with an estimated $700m price tag.
Other interests likely to be offloaded include stakes in Standard Chartered Bank, Gulf Stream Asset Management and EMPG.

Dubai World built up worldwide portfolio of assets during the Noughties, including a large property empire. The acquisitions were made using part of its own equity as well as large debt from international banks.
But last November, it announced that it was seeking to delay debt-servicing payments as it looked to undertake a capital refinancing.
Since then Dubai World has received about $6.2bn in emergency funding from the Dubai Financial Support Fund (DFSF).

It is understood that Dubai World will look to sell its assets individually rather than as a portfolio.
The QE2 cruise liner could be sold off as its Dubai owner looks to ease its debt mountain, it has been reported.
State-backed investment firm Dubai World plans to sell a raft of assets - including the luxury liner - owned by its private equity arm Istithmar, according to the Sunday Times.
Dubai World is laden with debts of £14 billion and sent shockwaves through global markets last November when it asked to delay repayments to around 100 banks while it attempted to tackle its finances.
Istithmar bought the QE2 from Cunard in 2007 for 100 million US dollars (£64 million) amid plans at the time to transform it into a luxury floating hotel.
The liner, which was launched by the Queen in September 1967, was the longest-serving ship in Cunard's 168-year history. It crossed the Atlantic more than 800 times and carried more than 2.5 million passengers.
Other trophy assets on the block could also include the Canadian circus group Cirque du Soleil.
Advisers to Dubai World led by accountancy firm Deloitte are expected to present the plans for asset sales to creditors led by banks Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC and Lloyds Banking Group in the coming months, the report said.
Alongside Istithmar's assets, Dubai World's interests range from Scotland's historic Turnberry golf course to a series of UK ports through its acquisition of P&O in 2006.
The company also owns Nakheel, which is behind Dubai's lavish Palm man-made island developments - although the expansion was fuelled by cheap debt and the emirate has since run into trouble.
In December Dubai received a £6 billion handout from oil-rich neighbour Abu Dhabi to help meet its obligations while it secures its financial future. Dubai World was unavailable for comment.

2011 Volkswagen Eos Gets a Facelift

PR Log (Press Release) – Jan 17, 2010 – France is preparing to restructure its freight transport sector, with an emphasis on increasing the percentage carried by rail by transferring freight typically carried by road onto rail. The switch will be helped by the fact that France's rail freight sector has become more competitive since its liberalisation in 2003, as new operators have entered the market, and the fact that France's rail freight links to major trading partners have improved and are continuing to do so. On the back of the Grenelle Environment Forum in November 2007, the French government has proposed legislation to increase the percentage of freight not carried by road from 14% to 25% by 2012.  BMI notes that road freight currently makes up the largest percentage of freight carried in France, at 68%. Rail freight, on the other hand, accounts for just 14%. France has been preparing its strategy to move freight off the roads and onto rail. The French rail sector has been liberalised, with independent operators able to operate in France since 2003. This has lead to heightened competition, which has led to more competitive freight rates. Some of Europe's main rail freight companies have entered the sector through subsidiary units and, according to the Invest in France Agency (IFA), these include Germany's  DB Schenker and  Rail 4 Chem, the UK's  Euro Cargo Rail, Switzerland's  BLS Cargo and  CFF Cargo, France's  SNCF subsidiary  VFLI and  Veolia Transport's unit  Veolia Cargo, as well as a company jointly run by  Luxembourg Railways and  Arcelor Mital,  CFL Cargo, and a subsidiary operated by  Eurotunnel,  Europorte 2. France's plans to shift road freight onto rail have been helped by investment not only into the country's rail infrastructure but also in rail links to its neighbours.  BMI notes that France's main trading partners are based in Europe, with Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and the UK topping the list. Rail transport between France, Italy, and Germany is to be improved with the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, which opened in December 2007, and the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is due to open in 2018. The tunnels go under the Swiss Alps and will cut rail freight journey times. This will make it more economically viable for freight to go by rail to Italy and Germany. We note that a similar situation arose when the Channel Tunnel opened in 1994. Freight that had been carried by trucks via ferry across the Channel could now reach the UK more quickly by rail. France's decision to reduce its road freight percentage and increase rail's share can be attributed to a number of factors. The country's roads and motorways are congested, and this would be alleviated if more freight were carried by rail. The strategy would also align France with the EU's aim of switching half of cargo currently transported by road onto the European rail network. This is related to plans to reduce the EU's carbon emissions. France's plans to reduce road transport are to be viewed as part of the country's plan to reduce its emissions by 20% by 2020. In  BMI's newly released  France Freight Transport Report, we forecast that rail freight traffic, measured in million-tonne kilometres (mntkm), will rise by an annual average of 1.4% over the next five years (2009-2013). Overall freight traffic, across all modes, will also grow by 1.4% per annum over the next five years. This is slower than the 1.8% registered in the preceding five-year period. By 2013, we calculate that the value of the transport and communications sector will have reached US$205.2bn, or 7.2% of GDP. Successive French governments have favoured public investment in big infrastructure projects, particularly in airports, railways, and highways. While arguably the emerging global slowdown means this will not be sustainable, some of the benefits, in terms of increased capacity, will make themselves felt within our forecast period. The emphasis on building key private sector companies up into 'national champions', while heavily criticised for its anti-competitive overtones, may also deliver some advantages.  Air France-KLM is a good example. Supported by the government, the merged airline is now one of the largest European carriers, and well placed to benefit from the expected shakeout and consolidation process in European aviation over the next few years. The other side of the coin, however, is that France has been slow to welcome (and indeed, in some cases seems to actively block) the advent of the budget airlines, which have swept across much of Europe. Our forecasts for the French industry are informed by the pan-European economic slowdown we are now expecting over 2009 and 2010. We see airfreight leading the way with average annual growth of 1.6%, followed by pipeline throughput (1.5%), road and rail (both at 1.4%), sea cargo (1.2%) and inland waterways (1.1%).  BMI's freight industry business environment rating gives France a score of 59.9 (out of a theoretical maximum of 100), placing at the higher end of the European ranking. On the downside, and putting Air France-KLM to one side for a moment, the French freight industry has not yet developed its full international potential.  BMI's conclusion is that the industry as a whole has solid foundations in the domestic market and, when international economic conditions become more supportive, may yet be able to build on these to support a bigger global role.
